How I Can Help

Through Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy I support people to make changes and move towards a more conscious and connected life, whatever that means for them.

For some people that might mean developing more of something like confidence, calm or self-compassion. For others it might mean letting go of something like anxiety, phobias or low mood. Some people may want to stop doing something they don’t like or that causes themselves or others harm. Others may want to start something they’ve previously felt unable to.

I believe you already have all the strengths and resources within you to move yourself towards that life you’d like to lead, increasingly free from old patterns and limitations. Together we can help you let go of those patterns, and free-up your strengths and resources for growth.

What is

Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy

Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern, evidence based* model of talking therapy that draws tools from Hypnotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and Solution Focused Brief Therapy, amongst others. It recognises that each person is an individual who both experiences whatever they’re struggling with in a way unique to them, and is looking for their unique future beyond that struggle. Whereas some traditional therapies offer standardised solutions, as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist, I will tailor my approach to treatment so they best suit your individual experience and desired solution.

That can start with a free 20min phone consultation call to help clarify your needs, answer any questions, understand whether we may be a good fit, and talk through process and costs.

“I think that therapy is the process of helping your client remain in growth during the periods when they used to be triggered into protection and, at a higher level, the goal of personal development is that of learning how to remain in growth regardless of our situation.”
- Trevor Silvester, Founder, The Quest Institute

My story

You could say my journey here started when trained as a Chartered Accountant, working for a global Professional Services company. That part of my path led me through the dynamic world of Mergers and Acquisitions, to a Renewable Energy Tech startup.

I was “ticking the standard success boxes”. Except for the small detail that what I was unknowingly chasing, and the ways I was managing myself (intense working hours, perfectionism, alcohol), were leaving me experiencing debilitating anxiety and had me on a path towards Burnout. And I was so buried in it all I had no idea, until the symptoms could no longer be ignored and I was on the verge of breakdown. Although I was slow to take action, ultimately that forced me to therapy, and I was incredibly fortunate to land in the capable hands of a Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapist.

Change

Over several years of QCH therapy, personal learning, yoga and several major life and career changes, I recognised that I was drawn to support people navigating their own challenges and changes. And as importantly, that my experiences allow me increasingly to understand that we’re all fellow strugglers, in different ways, at different times, for different reasons. And that means I can effectively support others experiencing challenges with compassion and without judgement.

From the vantage point of now, I can look back at that experience as a gift, even if at the time it was terrifying, confusing and painful, because over time they've led me to being able to help others make changes in their own lives.

“Our painful experiences aren’t a liability – they’re a gift. They give us perspective and meaning, an opportunity to find our unique purpose and our strength.” Dr Edith Eger

Therapy training

I trained as a Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapist, NLP Practitioner and Master Practitioner at the internationally acclaimed Quest Institute at Regents College in London. I am a member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH), the Quest Cognitive Hypnotherapy Practitioners Association (QCHPA) and hold the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) – the first nationally accredited Hypnotherapy qualification. I hold Professional Indemnity insurance through Oxygen, part of the Marsh group and, through Continuing Professional Development (CPD), evolve and build my skills and approach.

Work with me

I offer a free 20 minute, no obligation phone consultation call to help clarify your needs, answer any questions, talk through process and costs, and understand whether we may be a good fit.

After initial consultation our work will start with a 60-90 minute session for us to understand your individual experience, and how you’d like to be beyond it. This allows me to better asses how to move forwards, and tailor a treatment plan to your unique needs.

Following that, sessions are 60-75 minutes, and it’s generally session two onwards where we roll our sleeves up and really get into making change.

All new clients start with a minimum block of 3 sessions to give the opportunity to start experiencing changes, and for me to understand better how to move forwards and any complicating factors. At that point we’ll be able to see how much change has been possible, and whether more sessions could support further change. After that, sessions can be one-off, or in further blocks.

Some people can experience significant change in 3 sessions, for others it can take more: as with life, therapy comes with no guarantees, but I commit to fully showing up and working together in partnership. Each of us turning up and committing to moving you forwards can give you the best chance to experience changes, and committing to working together as a team means that change can be possible. Until we start working together neither of us know how quickly or how much, just that it’s possible.

Where I think it’s beneficial as part of each clients’ individualised treatment plan I’ll provide Tasks and short audio recordings for use between sessions. These can help consolidate the work we’ve done together in sessions, and speed up the impact.

Blocks of sessions are £230 for 3 (10% discount), or £445 for 6 (13% discount). After an initial block (3 or 6 sessions) single sessions are available at £85 each or further blocks can be used. Payment is by bank transfer or payment link before the session, or first session of a block.

I work both Online (over Zoom) and In-Person at Sheffield Wellness Centre, Abbeydale Road, Sheffield, UK.

One final thought

If you’ve come so far as to find this, you’re likely experiencing some challenge and looking for a different future beyond it. And while that can ultimately be a liberating and life changing journey, I know from personal experience it can also be scary. So for just getting to this point, I congratulate you on your courage in believing that change is possible. As Lao Tzu once wrote “the journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step”: whether it’s with me, or down another path, take the step, it could change your life.

If you’d like to take that step with me, contact me for a free 20 minute consultation call.

FAQs

The flexibility of the QCH Therapy model means I have supported clients with many different  challenges. Most of my focus tends to be around fear, which might show up in a client’s life as:

  • Anxiety and Burnout, whether Generalised Anxiety Disorder, or anxiety in specific situations such as: public speaking, presenting, dating, social anxiety, etc
  • Phobias and fears of all varieties (including: medical, flying, animals, driving, vomiting, etc)
  • Depression or low mood
  • Being “stuck”, in life, work, relationships, health, etc

If you’re curious whether working together could help you, contact me to book a no-obligation consultation call.

How many sessions you need will depend on many things, including what you’re experiencing, what underlies the issue you’re having, how much change you want or need to feel, and how consistently you’re able to take steps to support our in-session work in between sessions. Some people experience the changes they’re looking for in 3 sessions, I work with many people for somewhere around 6 sessions, and can work with others on and off over more sessions and longer periods. Often we’ll arrange to see each other weekly or every other week to start, and after that we can be flexible to your needs. I ask all new clients to commit to at least 3 sessions as a starting point to give them the best opportunity to start to notice changes.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a modern form of talking therapy developed by The Quest Institute and Trevor Silvester (QCH Therapy). It’s a highly collaborative approach in which the therapist will act as a guide to individualise treatment to the client and the specific ways they experience the issue they’d like to change. It draws tools and techniques from Hypnotherapy, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Positive Psychology, Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), amongst others, with the aim of tailoring the tools to the client, rather than requiring the client to “fit” a rigid set of tools: we are all individuals so it stands to reason an individual approach could be most effective.

QCH Therapy works with a client’s past, present, and future, as required. Working in the present might mean helping a client learn tools to change the way they feel or think. Working in the past might mean exploring ways to relate differently to old experiences, or dissipate difficult emotions from old memories. Working with a client’s future is often called Solution Focused Therapy, and is key to guiding them towards the future they would like to experience in place of the issue they’re having.

Fundamental to QCH Therapy is an understanding that humans function with a dynamic unconscious mind, which for the majority of the time (some studies suggest up to 95% of the time), is responsible for “running the show” as it were. This means that QCH Therapy works on both the Conscious and Unconscious elements of someone’s experience to support faster, more complete, and longer-lasting change. Key to this is utilising the trance state the client moves into while experiencing their issue as a pathway to dissolving the issue.

There are many different forms and schools of hypnotherapy, so what follows is a generalisation, and like all generalisations, it will be true in some cases and not in others. Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an approached developed by Trevor Silvestor and The Quest Institute, hence the “Quest” as a diffrentiator:

Individualised Approach

That said, QCH Therapy tailors both the use of suggestive language and the tools, techniques and interventions to each individual client and their specific experience of their world and issue. In practice this means that no two treatments, even for the same presenting “label” (eg. anxiety) will be the same, because each of those clients will “do” the anxiety they experience differently, at different times, with different triggers and implications, and each will want something different beyond that experience. Some other forms of more traditional hypnotherapy use set scripts for specific issues, which can mean a less individualised treatment, and those scripts are often based on a standardised idea of what changes should be, rather than what the client has said they specifically want.

Trance as an every-day experience

Traditional Hypnotherapy often looks at experiencing trance as a state that the Hypnotherapist puts the client into, and that being “deeper” in trance is better. By comparison, Cognitive Hypnotherapy understands trance as an every-day experience that all of us have. If you’ve ever driven your car somewhere and arrived having thought through everything on your To-Do list, but with no memory of actually driving the car, you’ve experienced trance. If you find yourself getting scared in the face of something that doesn’t have the same effect on everyone else around you, you’ve experienced trance. If you’ve ever said to yourself you’ll stop eating cake, or drinking wine, and then found yourself at the fridge with the thing you’re not having in your hand, you’ve experienced trance. And because trance is part of how we all “do” the issues we experience, it can also be used as a route in to helping clients “un-do” it. So “deeper” isn’t better or worse, in a Cognitive Hypnotherapy approach, it’s just not important.

Solution Focused and More

A lot of traditional hypnotherapy is solely Solution Focused, it uses language to help clients connect to internal resources and guide them to more of what they do want, and less of what’s brought them to therapy. This is what you could call a “future focus”. Solution Focused therapy is a key element of Cognitive Hypnotherapy, but it also acknowledges the power of the many different ways working with a client’s past can allow them to let go of old behaviours and beliefs, and how changing their present experience can become a platform for a different future. So it works with past, present and future, rather than just the future.
